Objectives: Despite advances in modern medicine, cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death worldwide.
The American Heart Association (AHA) reported that the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique may be considered in clinical practice to help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death in CVD patients.
Design and Methods: Meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and controlled clinical studies on the effects of the TM technique on cardiovascular disease and its risk factors were analyzed.
Results: Clinical trials indicate that TM practice positively influences key mechanisms of CVD, including hypertension, psychosocial stress, and smoking, and improves surrogate markers and clinical outcomes.
Conclusions: The wide-ranging effects of TM on cardiovascular health suggest that it may be effectively applied for both prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
